What is ASMR?

ASMR is an abbreviation for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. It is a response or reaction to a certain visual, sound, or stimuli - usually a tingly sensation, but not always!

ASMR can help individuals with depression, insomnia, and anxiety. It can also be used to help with the relaxation of the mind and body.

ASMR is most popular for its video and audio format on platforms such as YouTube and Spotify. The videos usually incorporate visuals, sounds, and stimuli that trigger an individual's ASMR. Some of my favourites include realistic medical roleplays and interactive ASMR (asking questions or performing tasks and tests). There are a variety of videos for all sorts of individuals who experience ASMR - I assure you there is something for everybody!

Personally, I would say that ASMR is within all of us. You don't necessarily have to experience 'tingles', but even listening to the rain and feeling relaxed is a form of ASMR due to its visuals and sounds.

A Tingly Sensation...

Many people describe the 'tingly sensation' as a shiver or a relaxing sensation that runs from the top of the head to the bottom of the spine. It's fascinating that everyone experiences a tingly sensation differently and from various triggers, such as personal attention, sensory, or familiar and/or nostalgic sounds. I experience a tingly sensation most when a video is realistic and brings back some sort of nostalgia, almost always soft-spoken, but I do like the odd whispering. It's important to remember that there are many triggers, essentially any sound that is moderately quiet can be used for ASMR.

How do you know if you have ASMR?

Is ASMR something you have? or Is it something you experience?

Personally, I would say that ASMR is within all of us. You don't necessarily have to experience 'tingles', but even listening to the rain and feeling relaxed is a form of ASMR due to its visuals and sounds. Did you every enjoy roleplaying as a child? getting your hair brushed? or felt calm during a bedtime story? - these are all forms of ASMR. ASMR is any visual or sound that makes you feel calm, whether you get the 'tingles' or not.
